Listen to the backing MP3 before Suno: a two-minute chord check

2026.10.29

Suno doesn't read chord names. The progression only reaches Suno as sound: you upload a plain chords-only MP3 (keys and pads), and Suno follows what it hears. So judge the progression by listening to that MP3 before you upload. Suno won't fix a weak one.

How to listen

  • Listen to the chords only: not whether it's a good song, but whether the chords connect smoothly
  • Point at the spot you dislike and have it replaced
The 5th chord floats. Swap it for one that leads more smoothly into the 6th
(move the bass by a semitone).
It's too bright overall. Keep the motion, but make bars 3–4
darker-sounding chords.

Repeat in the same chat until it sounds good on its own. A good progression often comes out on the first try, but if your bar is high, listening and fixing is where the difference is made.

What not to add

Melody, bass and drums are off by default. Adding parts to the plain render makes Suno's result worse. The exception is odd meters (7/8 etc.): meter only reaches Suno through drums, so ask for drums in that case only.
